Tuesday News

It's Tuesday and with that comes my morning coffee and news. This week, I'm kicking off something different. Instead of my usual randomness, I thought I would springboard my rantings from the headlines that most captured my eye.

In the news today there's more warnings.... Too Much Too Young: Children Glued to TV & Computer Screens at Risk for Cancer and Obesity. Gee, you reckon?  I agree technology - computers & TV tends to lead to a more sedentary lifestyle this isn't the whole problem.

Think about it, 40 years ago when I was a kid, we had TV.  We all watched our favorite programs after school or on the weekends. However, my mom along with all the other moms in the neighborhood insisted on each of us doing other things.

We played indoors and out using our brilliant imaginations to create hours upon hours of interactive play which included physical activities galore - dodge ball, softball, tag, basketball, hopscotch, bicycling, rollerskating, and the list goes on. We also managed to have quiet play time - Barbie dolls, house, boardgames, card games, etc.

We ate junk food just like kids do today, but we were limited on how much we had because money was tight.  For us, snack foods were a big treat unlike it is for most children today. Another thing is we never ate junk food out of boredom. I mean, who had time to be bored with other things like activities that burned those wasted calories.

Where were the obesed kids? I can tell you this, they were far and few between.

My opinion is the alarming cause of issue is poor dietary habits plus inactivity. This is what's putting our children at risk for certain cancers and excess weight gain. Liberals are trying to make it look like technology is the evil force behind this problem, just like they try to say that guns kill people when the truth of the matter is it starts with people. I dare say these kids are only mimicking what they see in their parents. You know,  "Monkey see. Monkey do."

Where does the real change need to begin?

Marriage or Rape? 90-Year-Old Saudi Weds 15-Year-Old Girl.   My brain will never be able to wrap around this sort of ideology found in the Middle East cultures. This is simply unfathomable.

To me, it makes no difference if a man lives in a far away land where this sort of thing is customary or down the street where it is illegal and the man is labeled a pedophile, having sex with a child wife or not is wrong! Love making is meant to be a beautiful thing between to consenting adults, but sexual behaviors of this sort blemishes the intended act, making it a selfish, crude, and ugly deed.

In yesterday's news the headlines read: GA Mom Shoots Intruder 5 Times Saves Children. I believe this woman deserves Mother of the Year for such heroism. Can you imagine, if she didn't have a gun to protect herself and children? The story may have been far different than this. Instead, the headlines may have read: Mother and Twin Sons Murdered by Home Intruder.  I, for one, am happy with the favorable outcome for this family.

This little tid-bit has nothing to do with the headlines. Last Thursday, I posted these questions (revised slightly):

1. Do you think it would be a fun feature on my blog to send out birthday greetings?

2. Would you be interested in participating in this new weekly or monthly spotlight on my blog? If so, please leave your birthday (month, day,  & year or what you're most comfortable doing) and your home page URL in my comments.

This has been a blog hop participation. Why not join me in a cup of coffee as I visit with my lovelies....

This morning my poor wee girl is getting way too much TV --- but I am sitting with ice on my back because I can barely stand up. Hubby is at work and her siblings/playmates are at school today: so just broke-back mommy. However, this is an unusual occurrence - normally she might have had 1 or 2 shows only while I had coffee and checked email/blogs etc,; then we'd be off doing something. I try to balance it all out - some weeks we are just going, going, going....and then I declare a "veg" day. A lazy day is okay every now and then.
I cannot believe there was a time when girls as young as 13 years old used to get married!! Can you imagine? How was it ever okay then?

Definitely give that mom "Mother of the Year" - holy cow. I could only hope and pray I would respond with as much courage. (although, cannot keep guns so handy here in Canada. luckily, I already have a cop in the house - LOL)

Are you thinking of doing Birthday greetings on your blog? What a lovely idea that would be! A virtual birthday party! brilliant. Mine is May 13, 1971 -- which puts me in the 40 something and proud! :)

The Middle East cultures STILL marry young girls. I read in Reader's Digest recently of a 9-year old Yemen who was given into marriage with a 30-year old. The father offered his daughter to this man with the wishes he would not touch her until she was old enough. Long story short, he didn't wait and he beat her. Luckily she had the courage to go to a judge to request a divorce. She wrote a book about her story, but I do not have this information to share, as I tossed that RD issue out without thinking. The article did say this young girl is now 15. Thanks for joining my birthday bash celebration. You're a year younger than my baby sister. =D

Cathy, you write well.
I agree about the obesity. It is so sad to see what some parents will allow and refuse to take responsibility in realizing that they are RESPONSIBLE for helping their children make good choices with everything in life until they can do so on their own!

And of that awful thing that children must endure being violated and crippled in mind is most unthinkable.

Even God has given us choice to choose him or not.

And I agree with you about that mom protecting her children. I as a mother sleeps with weapons in close range for just such an intrusion. Too bad people do not realize the police is not a personal bodyguard. The only people who have such defense are the rich and famous.

And I always say try whatever you want on your blog. It should be your play area.

Love this post! I blogged about the Georgia Mom today, she is nothing less than a true hero!

In my opinion sex at 15 is never right whether it be with another 15 year old or a disgusting 90 year old. At that age they should be worried about what clothes to wear, if their makeup looks good and who's dating who not who's doing who!

Thanks for linking up with us.
