Commercials today lack the creativity and memorability of jingles' past. These few select picks to prove my point will forever be stuck in the recesses of my brain and I bet they are for you, as well.
Wrigley's gum was always popular at our house. My mother always kept Double Mint gum in her coat pocket and when this commercial aired I thought it was totally cool with the use of twins which forever became synonymous
A catchy fun jingle which makes a kid wanna get a scrap just so they could run to the medicine cabinet to grab on of these....
I remember the Chiquita Banana jingle, but the commercial used in my
childhood years was different. This one is really cute, funny, and educational -
very clever!
Here's another catchy one that was a sure bet for children to help Mom remember their product.
Feminist would love this song up until the very end. That being said, I love it! As a young girl it sorta sent an empowering message to me. You know the whole, I can work outside the home, do everything around the house, and still find time for my husband. Okay, in truth this isn't exactly how it works in the real world, but I still enjoy the concept of this little jingle even after all this time.....
1. Thinking back to your own childhood, name your favorite commercial and give us a line from the jingle you remember most?
2. Do you think retro commercial jingles have a place in today's marketing? Would it help sales?

I'm gonna leave with this, definitely outdating this gal. The first jingle is from 1939 (my daddy's birth year) and the second one is from 1950.

My prayers are with you and your daughter now.
Loved these commercials - obviously we didn't have these particular ones in Australia so they are all completely new to me! :-) Thanks for sharing!
Prayers for DD#2 and your family.
Great post, too.
My thoughts are with you and your family.
Now I'll be singing the Band-Aid song all day!
Prayers going out for DD and you ~ Lovely and fun post for 'J' ~ jingles tend to get stuck in the brain for a reason ~ to sell stuff!
(A Creative Harbor) ^_^
The banana commercial was new to me, but I like my bananas before they get the brown spots!
I have noticed a lot more singing on commercials this winter. Maybe a return to singing commercials?
Added my prayers for DD...
Hope DD2 improves. I avoid commercials on TV since we pre-record the shows.
great ads -- how well I remember them (and Dad singing the Pepsi one). Remembering not a jingle but the "How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?" Terrible that I'd think of that first :) Hope your friend improves quickly.
How about Speedy Alka Selzer? Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is!! The little guy with the Alka Selzer tablet on his head always made me smile! Now we learn about the various ways medications can harm you or about how your man can be more 'manly' or how everyone who uses perfume always speaks with a French accent! I mute them! Or record for later and zip though those commercials! I like the old style better -- funny and cute, not about embarrassing things to hear about in front of your kids!
praying
Hi Cathy ~~ I too will pray for DD#2 and for all you guys. And my hopes are that she is better right now. My BIL, Royce, was in the hospital for over a week with blood pressure and circulation problems with his ulcer. Two days after he was home he contracted pneumonia. It took more than two weeks for him to get back out. That all was happening while we were off in NZ and Australia. Royce lost 40 pounds during all of this.
I remember Wriggley's, the Band-aid, and the Chiquita Banana songs but not the other. At home we didn't have electricity until 1938 so no radio that us kids could listen to. We never did have TV until after I left home which is probably why I don't remember the other two. The 1939 I was there but couldn't listen.
Did you know that the Chiquita Banana song made the top 40's Hit List?
I think that the retro jingle songs could be used for reminder advertising for the benefit of the older people but not the younger generation.
..
I love those old jingles...
I guess there was sex in those old commercials too. Now they're just a little overboard! {:-Deb
Hi Cathy, I don't watch tv except for news- once in blue moon, so I don't know the current commercials. I do recall a few older commercials that I like - like the pepsi commercial with pink and beyonce, the target commercial is also very enticing and fun and always memorable to me.
The commercials you've posted here are all very memorable. I think they do make you want to sing along and think of the product much more than if they didn't have the jingle.
Hope DD#2 recovers soon!
Yeah I remembered the twins on the commercials of Wrigley gum:) Great J-word!
they always manage to stick in our heads, whether we want them to or not!
Cathy, my prayers are with you and your daughter. The sickies are really hurting many people right now. Please be careful.
1. In my country a fave was the Island dairy song :) I still sing it even now.
2. YES! Advertisers these days need to backtrack and learn to be creative.
Aloha!
I'm sorry your family is under the weather... Hoping things look up soon...
Thanks for the Joyous trip down memory lane...
Some current advertisements I find enjoyable but you really can't compete with the classics...
Great Job for the letter J...
Thanks for linking,
A+
