Coming Tonight... Earth's Close Encounter!

Photo Borrowed: foxnews.com

Hubba-hubba, this is freaky stuff! Tonight around 6:28pm EST Asteroid 2005 YU55 will pass approximately within 202,000 miles from the earth. That's closer than moon, folks, which is roughly 239,000 miles from us.  This chunk of space rock is said to be approximately 1,300 feet across.  That's about the square footage of our home and it's gonna be traveling fast, fast at 29,000mph.

This will be the first closest flyby of its kind in over thirty years.  Don't worry, according the report there is no reason to worry with it impacting the earth. So, you don't need to run to the basement for shelter.  Perhaps, if you're lucky enough you may even catch a glimpse of this faint and fast moving space rock somewhere in the sky this evening!

  1. oooh still a scary thought though. Although I'll probably be out there looking for it blinking away at the blackness knowing the inevitable - There's no way of seeing it from here in the UK LOL

  2. Oh man, that is so COOL!

I really wish I could have gone outside to look for it xD

Although, it is a little unnerving to think something that big is traveling so close to the Earth!
